Domains in Sri Lanka: choose, register and control your domain
Editorial review: 28 August 2026 · By: Alston Antony
A working Sri Lankan domain setup is one you actually control: the record sits at LK Domain Registry (directly or via an authorised agent), your business or your name is the registered registrant, and the account used to manage the domain uses your email. Hosting is a separate purchase connected through DNS. This page is the cornerstone - it explains the choice and the ownership essentials; every deep decision (which extension, exact pricing, how registration works step by step) links into a dedicated child guide.
Which domain should you choose?
.lk. If the name is taken, check second-level alternatives such as .com.lk. .com is often the more useful default. .com.lk, .org.lk) or reassess the brand or spelling. Full comparison on .lk vs .com.
How .lk works, in one paragraph
LK Domain Registry is the sole administrator of the .lk namespace and has issued .lk addresses since 1990. Every reseller that sells a .lk (register.lk, LankaHost, Provider.lk, SriLankaHosting.lk and others) is either an authorised agent selling into the same central registry or a reseller of an agent. The record itself lives in one central Registry database; agents are commercial front-ends handling payment, account and DNS controls. If problems arise with an agent, contact the Registry for the appropriate assistance or change-of-agent process - the .lk record does not disappear because the agent does. See what a .lk domain is for the deeper explanation.
.lk namespaces at a glance
| Namespace | Registry status | Suggested use |
|---|---|---|
.lk | Open (top-level) | General use, Sri Lankan and international |
.com.lk | Open (second-level) | Suggested for commercial organisations |
.org.lk | Open (second-level) | Suggested for non-profit organisations |
.edu.lk | Open (second-level) | Suggested for educational organisations |
.hotel.lk | Open (second-level) | Suggested for hotels |
.web.lk | Open (second-level) | Suggested general use |
.sch.lk, .gov.lk, .ac.lk | Specially administered | Schools, government and universities - separate policies apply |
Second-level namespaces marked "suggested for" reflect the Registry's suggested-use guidance, not hard eligibility rules; specific eligibility questions are answered by the Registry.
Current price snapshot
The hub carries only a short reference snapshot. Full pricing (agent comparisons, year-one vs renewal, multi-year discounts) lives on the .lk domain price guide.
| Option | Direct Registry price |
|---|---|
| .lk Economy (top-level, 4+ letters, non-numeric) | LKR 5,000/year |
| .com.lk / .org.lk (Budget second-level) | LKR 1,000/year |
| .lk Standard package (bundles top-level with .com.lk / .org.lk / .edu.lk) | LKR 8,000/year |
Authorised agents may price above or below the Registry tariff, and year-one rates often differ from renewal. Compare current year-one, renewal and multi-year totals on .lk domain price.
Domain ownership and control
"Ownership" of a .lk is a set of contact roles recorded at LK Domain Registry: Registrant (the person or organisation recorded as the highest authority for the domain), Administrative Contact, Technical Contact and Billing Contact. The Registrant / Organisation field is required to reflect the actual person or organisation using the domain, per Registry policy. Public WHOIS displays only the visible organisation name (or the registrant name for an individual) and the renewal date; sensitive contact details are not published there.
Real ownership problems in Sri Lanka usually come from configuration mistakes at registration time - the wrong person is recorded as registrant, or the account used to manage the domain is not one the business controls.
One important domain-control problem to avoid is having a designer or agency recorded as the registrant instead of the actual business or person. It is not always malicious - it often happens because the designer registered the domain to get the site live - but the Registry does not offer a fast reversal path, so it is easier to prevent than to unwind. See how to choose a web designer for the ownership clause to write into the quotation.
Domain vs hosting vs DNS - the three layers
A domain, a hosting account and DNS are three separate layers connected through a common set of records. They can (and often do) sit with different providers.
- Domain. The human-readable address (yourbusiness.lk). Purchased at LK Domain Registry or an authorised agent.
- DNS. The lookup layer that tells services where to go - which servers host the website, which servers handle mail, which service verifies ownership. Managed on the registrar/agent side or on a separate DNS provider.
- Hosting. Where the website actually runs. Any host - Sri Lankan or international - works with any domain.
- Email. Can be a separate provider from the website (Google Workspace, Zoho, Microsoft 365, or the host's own mail service).

How to choose a good domain name
Choose the actual name first, then the extension. A domain name is a piece of brand infrastructure and lasts longer than most website builds.
- Use the actual brand or business name where possible. A domain that matches the business is easier to communicate verbally, easier to remember and less confusing on invoices and email addresses.
- Prefer easy spelling. Names that sound the same but spell differently create real friction on phone and voice notes.
- Keep it short enough to say out loud. If it does not fit comfortably in a spoken introduction, it is too long.
- Avoid confusing hyphens and numbers where you can. If you must include them (because the exact name is taken), document how the name is written and used.
- Check trademark and business-name conflicts before you register.
- Consider securing relevant .lk and .com variants when both are strategically useful - but pick one as the canonical primary and redirect the other to it. Do not run duplicate versions of the same site on both.
- Do not choose a keyword-stuffed name solely for SEO. A brandable name outperforms a generic keyword name in the long run for most Sri Lankan businesses.

Frequently asked questions
Is a .lk domain safe to rely on for a Sri Lankan business?
Yes. LK Domain Registry has administered .lk since 1990 and all authorised agents sell into the same central registry, so the domain record itself is durable. Common practical risks include incorrect registrant details, lost account access, missed renewals and DNS mistakes - these are configuration problems, not registry problems.
How much does a .lk domain cost per year?
The LK Domain Registry price for a top-level Economy .lk is LKR 5,000/year VAT-inclusive (checked 2026-08-29). Authorised agents may price above or below the Registry tariff, and year-one rates often differ from renewal rates. See the .lk domain price guide for the full comparison.
Do I have to buy hosting from the same company as the .lk domain?
No. The .lk domain record and hosting are independent purchases connected by DNS. Buying them together is a convenience, not a technical requirement, and the registrar cannot restrict where you point your nameservers.
Can a foreigner or foreign company register a .lk?
Yes. The open .lk namespace (top-level .lk and second-level namespaces such as .com.lk, .org.lk, .edu.lk, .hotel.lk and .web.lk) is open registration. The closed namespaces .sch.lk, .gov.lk and .ac.lk are administered separately with documented eligibility that a foreign entity generally will not have.
