Before you start - what to have ready
A complete, compliant application is handled faster than an incomplete one. LK Domain Registry generally handles applications on a first-come, first-served basis, but a later complete application can take priority over an earlier incomplete one. Prepare:
- The preferred domain name (and a couple of alternates in case it is unavailable).
- Registrant details - a real contact person representing the intended user of the domain, with a stable email that you actually control.
- Organisation details - the legal or trading name of the business or institution using the domain, if applicable.
- Administrative Contact email - the address that will receive the 24-hour verification email and later authoritative correspondence.
- Technical Contact - the person who will manage nameserver / DNS updates (can be the same as Admin, or a hosting provider).
- Billing Contact - the person who receives payment correspondence.
- Postal address and phone for the Registrant / Organisation.
- Identifying information - NIC / passport / driving licence number where applicable; organisation registration information for a business.
- A brief reason for choosing the domain and intended use. Example: "examplebusiness.lk - official website for Example Business (Pvt) Ltd, providing information about our products and customer contact details."
- Supporting documents where the Registry asks for them (varies by name / organisation / intended use).
- Nameservers - if you already know your host or DNS provider, have their exact nameservers ready. Otherwise you can configure this after activation.
Option 1 - Register directly with LK Domain Registry
The direct Registry workflow is request-first, pay-after-approval. This differs from a normal .com purchase where checkout and activation happen together.
- Search availability at domains.lk. Note whether the name qualifies for Economy, Budget, Standard package, Desirable or Premium - the Registry classifies the name for you at the point of checkout.
- Create or log in to an LK Domain Registry account.
- Select the domain and package. Choose the term (1, 2, 5 or 10 years) if you already know.
- Enter Registrant, Administrative, Technical and Billing contact details. For a business, Registrant is a contact person from the business; Organisation is the business itself. Include a brief reason for the domain and its intended use.
- Submit the application.
- Verify the Administrative Contact email within 24 hours. LK Domain Registry sends a verification link to the Administrative Contact. Unverified applications are automatically removed after 24 hours.
- Registry review. The Registry checks the request and may ask for clarification or supporting documents (see the documents section below).
- Payment instructions on approval. If approved, the Registry sends payment instructions.
- Complete payment within three working days. Payment must be received within three working days of approval.
- Registration activated. The domain becomes active in the .lk namespace.

Option 2 - Register through an authorised agent
Authorised agents (register.lk, LankaHost, Provider.lk, SriLankaHosting.lk and others on the Registry's authorised resellers list) offer their own checkout with their own retail pricing and, in some cases, automated same-day activation for qualifying applications. Registering through an agent creates an additional service-provider relationship. Keep your Registrant / Organisation details correct at the Registry level and retain access to the agent account and its contact information. If an unresolved agent issue occurs, LK Domain Registry says registrants can contact the Registry for assistance.
Agent automation can speed up qualifying requests, but registrations remain subject to LK Domain Registry policies and review authority. The Registry retains discretion to reject, suspend or cancel registrations that do not comply with its policy - even registrations accepted through an agent.

Registrant, Administrative, Technical and Billing roles
LK Domain Registry uses four contact roles, and each has a defined scope of authority. Getting them right at registration is more important than any later re-configuration - Registry policy generally does not allow easy changes to Registrant/Organisation after the fact.

Which .lk category?
The Registry classifies each name into a pricing category based on its structure (top-level vs open second-level, letter count, whether numeric). You do not need to guess the CAT number - search the desired name and use the category shown by the Registry or authorised agent.
- Economy (top-level .lk, 4+ letters, non-numeric) - the default for most Sri Lankan business domains.
- Budget (open second-level: .com.lk / .org.lk / .edu.lk / .web.lk / .hotel.lk) - lower price than the top-level; can be a good option if the preferred top-level name is unavailable.
- Standard package - the top-level .lk bundled with the available open second-level names for the same string.
- Desirable / Premium - short names (3-letter or 8-10 digit numeric = Desirable; 2-letter or 2-7 digit numeric = Premium) are priced higher and are subject to the Registry's premium categorisation.

Documents you may be asked for
Document uploads are optional for many ordinary requests, but LK Domain Registry may request supporting documents depending on the requested name, organisation or intended use. The Registry's procedure specifically covers supporting documentation for areas such as schools, religious places, banking, insurance, sports, gambling, political parties, associations / unions and universities.
The Registry expects accurate identifying information regardless of whether documents are uploaded (NIC / passport / driving licence number where applicable, and organisation registration information for a business). Providing complete, accurate details up front generally results in faster processing than providing minimal information.
After submitting - verify the Administrative email within 24 hours
LK Domain Registry sends a verification link to the Administrative Contact email address you provided. Click it within 24 hours. Unverified applications are automatically removed. This is easy to miss if the verification email lands in a spam folder or the Administrative Contact is an email address you rarely check - which is one of the reasons to use a stable, monitored address.
After approval - pay within 3 working days
If the Registry approves the application, it sends payment instructions. Complete payment within three working days of approval; missing this window can force the application to be resubmitted. Direct and agent payment methods differ - verify the currently supported payment options before checkout.
After registration - configure nameservers and DNS
DNS delegation is the step that connects the .lk record to the website, email and other services that people will actually use. The overall flow:
- .lk domain is delegated to a set of authoritative nameservers.
- The nameservers hold the DNS records (A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV) that point to the website host, mail provider and other services.
- Each service (web, email, verification, analytics) uses the appropriate DNS record type.
Two common configurations:
- Use your web host's nameservers. Enter the exact nameserver hostnames your host provides. Manage the rest of the DNS records at your host's DNS panel.
- Use a separate DNS provider (e.g. Cloudflare). The DNS provider assigns your zone its own authoritative nameservers - enter the specific ones it gives you, not a generic hostname. Manage records at the DNS provider.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Recording the wrong Registrant or Organisation. If a provider registers on behalf of a customer, the Organisation should be the customer's organisation and the Registrant should be a contact from that organisation - not the provider.
