How to register a .lk domain in Sri Lanka (2026)

Editorial review: 28 August 2026 · By: Alston Antony

Quick answer

To register a .lk domain, decide whether to register directly with LK Domain Registry or through an authorised agent, prepare accurate Registrant / Organisation / Administrative / Technical / Billing contact details, submit the application, verify the Administrative Contact email within 24 hours, wait for Registry review, complete payment within three working days of approval, and then configure nameservers with your host or DNS provider. Direct at LK Domain Registry the Economy top-level .lk tariff is LKR 5,000/year VAT-inclusive; authorised reseller prices vary. See the .lk domain price comparison for current numbers.

Before you start - what to have ready

A complete, compliant application is handled faster than an incomplete one. LK Domain Registry generally handles applications on a first-come, first-served basis, but a later complete application can take priority over an earlier incomplete one. Prepare:

Option 1 - Register directly with LK Domain Registry

The direct Registry workflow is request-first, pay-after-approval. This differs from a normal .com purchase where checkout and activation happen together.

  1. Search availability at domains.lk. Note whether the name qualifies for Economy, Budget, Standard package, Desirable or Premium - the Registry classifies the name for you at the point of checkout.
  2. Create or log in to an LK Domain Registry account.
  3. Select the domain and package. Choose the term (1, 2, 5 or 10 years) if you already know.
  4. Enter Registrant, Administrative, Technical and Billing contact details. For a business, Registrant is a contact person from the business; Organisation is the business itself. Include a brief reason for the domain and its intended use.
  5. Submit the application.
  6. Verify the Administrative Contact email within 24 hours. LK Domain Registry sends a verification link to the Administrative Contact. Unverified applications are automatically removed after 24 hours.
  7. Registry review. The Registry checks the request and may ask for clarification or supporting documents (see the documents section below).
  8. Payment instructions on approval. If approved, the Registry sends payment instructions.
  9. Complete payment within three working days. Payment must be received within three working days of approval.
  10. Registration activated. The domain becomes active in the .lk namespace.
  11. Configure nameservers and DNS (see the DNS section below).

Option 2 - Register through an authorised agent

Authorised agents (register.lk, LankaHost, Provider.lk, SriLankaHosting.lk and others on the Registry's authorised resellers list) offer their own checkout with their own retail pricing and, in some cases, automated same-day activation for qualifying applications. Registering through an agent creates an additional service-provider relationship. Keep your Registrant / Organisation details correct at the Registry level and retain access to the agent account and its contact information. If an unresolved agent issue occurs, LK Domain Registry says registrants can contact the Registry for assistance.

Agent automation can speed up qualifying requests, but registrations remain subject to LK Domain Registry policies and review authority. The Registry retains discretion to reject, suspend or cancel registrations that do not comply with its policy - even registrations accepted through an agent.

Registrant, Administrative, Technical and Billing roles

LK Domain Registry uses four contact roles, and each has a defined scope of authority. Getting them right at registration is more important than any later re-configuration - Registry policy generally does not allow easy changes to Registrant/Organisation after the fact.

.lk contact roles (source: LK Domain Registry)
RoleWhat it doesPractical guidance
Registrant Highest authority recorded for the domain. In a dispute, the Registrant's authority overrides the Administrative Contact. For an individual, use your own name. For a business, use a contact person from the business. The Registrant / Organisation must reflect the actual person or organisation using the domain per Registry policy.
Administrative Can authorise domain, contact and nameserver changes. Receives the 24-hour verification email at registration and later authoritative correspondence. Use an email controlled by the domain owner and likely to remain accessible long term. May be the Registrant or another authorised representative - the Registry does not require a specific job title.
Technical Can handle nameserver / technical administration and update nameserver information. May be the same as the Registrant or a hosting / DNS provider. Delegate the technical role if you like, but keep the Registrant and Administrative roles under the business's control.
Billing Receives and manages payment-related correspondence. Has no authority to change the domain. Use whichever contact handles finance in your organisation.

Which .lk category?

The Registry classifies each name into a pricing category based on its structure (top-level vs open second-level, letter count, whether numeric). You do not need to guess the CAT number - search the desired name and use the category shown by the Registry or authorised agent.

For pricing detail see the .lk domain price guide.

Documents you may be asked for

Document uploads are optional for many ordinary requests, but LK Domain Registry may request supporting documents depending on the requested name, organisation or intended use. The Registry's procedure specifically covers supporting documentation for areas such as schools, religious places, banking, insurance, sports, gambling, political parties, associations / unions and universities.

The Registry expects accurate identifying information regardless of whether documents are uploaded (NIC / passport / driving licence number where applicable, and organisation registration information for a business). Providing complete, accurate details up front generally results in faster processing than providing minimal information.

After submitting - verify the Administrative email within 24 hours

LK Domain Registry sends a verification link to the Administrative Contact email address you provided. Click it within 24 hours. Unverified applications are automatically removed. This is easy to miss if the verification email lands in a spam folder or the Administrative Contact is an email address you rarely check - which is one of the reasons to use a stable, monitored address.

After approval - pay within 3 working days

If the Registry approves the application, it sends payment instructions. Complete payment within three working days of approval; missing this window can force the application to be resubmitted. Direct and agent payment methods differ - verify the currently supported payment options before checkout.

After registration - configure nameservers and DNS

DNS delegation is the step that connects the .lk record to the website, email and other services that people will actually use. The overall flow:

  1. .lk domain is delegated to a set of authoritative nameservers.
  2. The nameservers hold the DNS records (A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV) that point to the website host, mail provider and other services.
  3. Each service (web, email, verification, analytics) uses the appropriate DNS record type.

Two common configurations:

DNS changes may begin appearing quickly, but allow up to 24 hours - and occasionally longer depending on caching, TTLs, resolver behaviour and provider conditions - before assuming something is broken.

Common mistakes to avoid

Frequently asked questions

Can I register a .lk without being Sri Lankan or having a Sri Lankan business?

Yes. LK Domain Registry currently states there is no local-presence requirement, so foreign individuals and organisations can register eligible .lk domains directly or through an authorised agent. The Registry publishes a separate USD tariff for foreign registrations. Some specific domain names or namespaces may require supporting documentation.

What documents do I need to register a .lk?

Not necessarily any beyond accurate identity and organisation details. Document uploads are optional for many ordinary requests, but LK Domain Registry may request supporting documents depending on the requested name, organisation or intended use (for example schools, universities, religious places, banking, insurance and similar areas listed in the Registry's procedure).

How long does .lk registration take?

LK Domain Registry's official FAQ states that a complete, paid application can be registered within one working day. Some authorised agents advertise faster automated turnaround for qualifying applications (LankaHost advertises 15-30 minutes; Provider.lk advertises an AI-driven instant approval process). Agent automation can speed up qualifying requests, but registrations remain subject to Registry policy and review authority.

Can I register a .lk for more than one year?

Yes. LK Domain Registry publishes 1, 2, 5 and 10-year prepaid terms. Authorised resellers may publish their own multi-year options. See the .lk domain price comparison for the current numbers.

What is the CAT category and do I need to pick one?

CAT is LK Domain Registry's pricing category (CAT1 Standard, CAT2 Economy, CAT3 Budget, CAT4 Premium, CAT5 Desirable). You do not need to guess it - the Registry or authorised agent classifies the name based on its structure at the point of checkout.
