Shopify in Sri Lanka

Yes, Shopify can be used for a Sri Lankan online store. Shopify includes hosting and the commerce platform, and a .lk domain connects through DNS. The main Sri Lanka-specific limitation is payments: Shopify Payments is not currently available in Sri Lanka, so merchants generally need a supported third-party gateway such as PayHere or WebXPay. Shopify then charges its plan-specific third-party transaction fee on eligible orders processed through that gateway - 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced - in addition to the gateway's own processing fee.
Does Shopify work in Sri Lanka?
Shopify is broadly available internationally and accepts Sri Lankan sign-ups. Billing currency and accepted billing methods can vary by location; verify the billing amount and payment method shown during account setup. Once the store is created, a Sri Lankan owner can pick a theme, add products, configure shipping zones and connect a .lk or .com domain. The store runs on Shopify's own servers - no separate web hosting is required.

Because hosting is included, "how much is hosting for Shopify?" is not really a Sri Lankan question - it is priced into the subscription.
Current Shopify pricing (monthly vs annual)
Shopify's USD pricing page distinguishes monthly billing from annual-billing effective monthly rate. Both are relevant - the difference determines whether you commit to a year at signup:

Approximate LKR equivalents (reference USD/LKR 320, checked 2026-08-27, illustrative only): Basic ~LKR 9,280/mo (annual equivalent) to ~LKR 12,480/mo (monthly); Grow ~LKR 25,280 to ~LKR 33,600; Advanced ~LKR 95,680 to ~LKR 127,680. Your effective LKR cost may differ from a reference-rate conversion because the card issuer's exchange rate and any applicable international-transaction fees vary.
The Sri Lanka limitation: Shopify Payments is not available here
Shopify + PayHere
PayHere publishes a first-party workflow for Sri Lankan Shopify merchants: install the PayHere Payment App from the Shopify App Store, enter your PayHere Merchant ID and Merchant Secret, and activate the PayHere Payment Gateway. The customer flow is: cart in Shopify → checkout page in Shopify → redirect to PayHere for card entry → return to Shopify on success. PayHere settles LKR into a Sri Lankan bank account.
- Fees. PayHere Lite 3.3% (no monthly fee); Plus 2.99% + LKR 3,990/mo; Premium 2.69% + LKR 9,990/mo. (Foreign-card transactions add a further surcharge; see the payment gateways page.)
- Plan limits matter. Lite is capped at LKR 50,000 per payment and LKR 200,000/month; Plus at LKR 250,000 per payment and LKR 3,000,000/month; Premium is unlimited monthly with LKR 1,000,000 per payment. A growing Shopify merchant can outgrow Lite's limits and need to move up.

Shopify + WebXPay
WebXPay publishes first-party Shopify integration documentation covering plugin installation, public/secret keys, test mode and return-URL configuration. Fees are quoted per merchant on WebXPay's current arrangement. Settlement currently published: T+1 for LKR settlement, T+2 for USD/GBP on XGateway. Verify current fees and settlement in the WebXPay merchant agreement before choosing between gateways.
How Sri Lankan transaction costs actually stack
A Sri Lankan Shopify merchant using PayHere pays the Shopify subscription plus, on each eligible gateway-processed order, both Shopify's third-party transaction fee and PayHere's processing fee. Illustrative combined fee at the reference PayHere Lite rate:

Combined percentage assumes PayHere Lite at 3.3% on a local card. Higher PayHere tiers reduce the processing rate but add a monthly plan fee - see the ecommerce cost model for break-even math on the gateway side. Manual payment methods (COD, bank transfer, cheques) are excluded from Shopify's third-party transaction fee.
Plan break-even math - when does upgrading pay for itself?
Break-even for upgrading Shopify plans depends on how much revenue you process through the third-party gateway, because the plan-price difference is offset by the lower third-party transaction fee at the next tier. The formula:
Break-even monthly gateway-processed GMV = (higher plan price - lower plan price) ÷ (fee percentage saving)
- Basic → Grow, annual billing: plan delta USD 50.00/month; fee delta 1.0 percentage points → break-even at roughly USD 5000.00 of gateway-processed GMV per month (approximately LKR 1,600,000 at USD/LKR 320).
- Basic → Grow, monthly billing: plan delta USD 66.00/month → break-even at roughly USD 6600.00 of gateway-processed GMV per month (LKR 2,112,000).
Below the break-even, Basic is cheaper; above it, Grow is. These figures are gateway-processed GMV only - manual payment methods (COD, bank transfer, cheques) are excluded from the Shopify third-party fee, so they do not count toward the break-even.
Connecting a .lk domain to Shopify
Shopify accepts any external domain, including .lk namespaces. Workflow:
- In the Shopify admin, go to Settings → Domains → Connect existing domain and enter your .lk address.
- Log in to LK Domain Registry or your authorised agent and enter the exact A / AAAA / CNAME values Shopify shows you in the Connect Existing Domain workflow. Do not hard-code values from a third-party guide - Shopify's current documentation may include region-appropriate variations.
- Allow up to 48 hours for the DNS and TLS state to become fully active. Shopify auto-issues a TLS certificate once the domain is verified.
Connecting a .lk to Shopify does not change its Registry / registrant relationship. You continue managing the .lk through LK Domain Registry or the agent while Shopify hosts the store. See .lk domain registration for the Registrant / Organisation details you should have on record.
PayPal in Sri Lanka - what's changing in 2026
PayPal's Sri Lankan receiving functionality is being enabled in 2026 through local banking partnerships. Cross-border receiving is now available for eligible linked accounts with Sampath Bank and Commercial Bank, initially for Personal accounts, with Business support still being rolled out. Domestic Sri Lanka-to-Sri Lanka PayPal payments are not supported. PayPal Checkout availability for Sri Lankan merchants is still in rollout - verify current PayPal Checkout eligibility for a Sri Lankan Business account before relying on it as a Shopify payment method.
When Shopify makes sense
- You're building a real store where managed commerce operations, checkout, inventory workflow and the app ecosystem are worth the subscription and additional third-party-payment costs.
- Your team prefers a fully managed platform (hosting bundled, updates handled) over managing WordPress + WooCommerce yourself.
- You benefit from Shopify's specific commerce features (multi-channel, POS, structured product data model, app ecosystem) more than from WooCommerce's flexibility.
When Shopify may not be the right fit
- Brochure or business website with no meaningful ecommerce requirement. A general website builder or CMS (Wix, WordPress, Hostinger Website Builder) is normally a better fit - Shopify is priced around commerce.
- You want to avoid the Sri Lankan third-party transaction fee on gateway-processed orders. WooCommerce with a Sri Lankan gateway plugin does not add a platform-level fee on top of gateway processing. See Shopify vs WooCommerce.
- You need workflows that Shopify does not natively support and would require custom app development to work around.

Compare the annual commitment against the flexibility of month-to-month before locking in.
