Website cost in Sri Lanka: what should you actually pay?

Website cost in Sri Lanka splits into four broad price bands, plus a separate annual line for running the site. Indicative planning ranges only - actual quotations vary widely by scope, provider and timeline:
- DIY (WordPress, Wix, or a builder): tens of thousands of LKR in the first year, mostly domain, hosting, a theme, and a mailbox. Your own time is the largest input.

What drives the number up or down
Website cost is a product of scope, not a fixed shelf price. Six variables move the LKR figure more than any single design choice. Negotiate on scope before you negotiate on price.
- Unique layouts. A 12-page site with three reusable layouts is cheaper than a 6-page site with six distinct layouts. Layouts are the design and development unit, not page counts.
- Content ownership. Who writes the copy and shoots the photography changes the build cost meaningfully. Ask for copy and photography as separate quotation lines with clear scope.
- Integrations. Payment gateways, WhatsApp Business handoff, CRM sync, courier APIs, marketing automation and analytics each add build and testing time.
- Language coverage. Sinhala and Tamil translations - copy, font handling and per-language QA - add work. Ask for languages as a separate quotation line rather than assuming a percentage premium.
- Timeline. A rush schedule generally costs more than a comfortable one for the same scope.
- Maintenance. A retainer for updates, security patching and small edits is common. Skipping it usually means paying per-fix rates when something breaks.
One-time vs recurring costs
The build is one-off; running the site is annual. Under-budgeting the recurring line is the most common Sri Lankan surprise.

What a quotation should include
DIY vs freelancer vs studio vs agency
Different provider shapes carry different overhead and different working models. The right pick depends on scope complexity and the risk profile of your project, not the provider size in the abstract.
- DIY. Lowest cash outlay; highest time cost. Reasonable for small brochure and personal sites where you accept the learning curve.
- Freelancer. One point of contact, lower overhead, works well when the scope is defined and the client side has a clear decision-maker.
- Small studio (2 to 5 people). Separate design, development and project-management roles. Useful when the project has multiple moving pieces or ongoing collaboration is expected.
- Larger agency. Formal process, dedicated project management, design, QA and account management. May include strategy, accessibility testing and ongoing support. Whether the premium is worthwhile depends on the complexity and risk of your project - compare scope, not organisation size.
Hidden costs to watch for

- Content and photography. If the quotation does not name who writes the copy and shoots the products, the answer often turns out to be "you", late in the project.
- Premium plugins and themes. WooCommerce and WordPress builds sometimes lean on plugins with annual renewals. Ask for the licence list before signing.
- Payment-gateway fees on ecommerce. The domain renews annually (LK Domain Registry lists a top-level .lk at LKR 5,000/year Economy and LKR 8,000/year Standard package; agents such as register.lk and LankaHost publish separate reseller prices). Hosting is monthly or annual. Business email is per mailbox per month or per year. The build itself is a one-off, with an optional monthly maintenance retainer on top.
Is it cheaper to build the site myself?
In cash yes, in time no. A DIY WordPress or builder site keeps the first-year outlay small (domain + hosting + a theme + a mailbox), but you spend real time learning the platform, sourcing photos, writing copy and troubleshooting. The trade is not build cost against zero - it is build cost against your own hours plus the risk of a site that under-serves the business.
What should the LKR figure on my quotation actually cover?
A clean quotation names the page count, the number of unique layouts, design revisions allowed, who writes the copy, who shoots the photos, who owns the domain and hosting account, the timeline with milestones, the payment schedule, launch training and the free-fix window after go-live.
