Ecommerce in Sri Lanka
Editorial review: 28 August 2026 · By: Alston Antony
Launching ecommerce in Sri Lanka requires five connected decisions: your store platform, payment methods, domain and hosting, delivery and fulfilment, and ongoing operations. WooCommerce and Shopify can both work, but local payment availability changes the economics - Shopify Payments is not currently available for Sri Lanka-based businesses, while providers such as PayHere and WebXPay offer local ecommerce integrations. Check payment-provider eligibility and requirements before committing to the platform, then compare total build and running cost. This page is the cornerstone that maps the stack and routes to specialist guides.
The Sri Lankan ecommerce stack
An ecommerce store is not just a website plus a payment gateway. The full operating stack has more layers than most launch guides show:
| Layer | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Storefront / platform | Editor, templates, checkout, admin |
| Products / inventory | Catalogue setup, variations, stock, categories |
| Payments | Card / wallet / QR gateway + manual methods (COD, bank transfer) |
| Shipping / fulfilment | Delivery zones, rates, courier accounts, tracking |
| Returns / refunds | Policy, workflow, reconciliation with the gateway |
| Customer communication | Order emails, WhatsApp confirmations, support |
| Analytics / marketing | GA4, Meta / Google Ads, retention |
| Accounting / invoicing | Invoicing, tax handling, reconciliation with your accountant |
| Domain and hosting | .lk / .com and, for self-hosted platforms, the hosting plan |
Step 1 - check payment / business eligibility before choosing the platform
This is the most important Sri Lanka-specific principle on this hub. Many generic ecommerce guides start with "Shopify vs WooCommerce" - for a Sri Lankan business, that's the wrong order. Verify how you'll accept money first, then choose the platform that supports that model.
Step 2 - choose how the store will run
No single platform is "the right ecommerce answer" for every Sri Lankan business. Three broad operating models:
Self-hosted ecommerce
WooCommerce on WordPress. You control hosting, WordPress and extensions.
Strong when: you want infrastructure and platform flexibility, WordPress fits the content workflow, and direct Sri Lankan gateway integrations matter.
WordPress in Sri LankaHosted ecommerce
Shopify. Hosting and platform operations are bundled into the subscription.
Strong when: simpler infrastructure management matters, the Shopify ecosystem/workflow suits the business, and the third-party payment economics remain acceptable given Sri Lankan payment realities.
Shopify in Sri LankaCustom ecommerce
Custom development.
Strong when: business requirements (multi-warehouse, ERP, custom pricing rules, complex integrations) genuinely justify the extra cost of a bespoke build.

One important Sri Lanka-specific Shopify note
Shopify Payments is not currently listed as available in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan merchants generally use a third-party gateway (PayHere publishes a first-party Shopify workflow), and Shopify then charges its plan-specific third-party transaction fee on eligible orders processed through that gateway - 2% on Basic - in addition to the gateway's own processing fee. Basic is currently USD 29.00/mo on annual billing and USD 39.00/mo on monthly billing. Manual payment methods such as COD, bank transfer and cheques are excluded from Shopify's third-party transaction fee. Full model on ecommerce website cost.
Step 3 - choose payment methods
Payment routes for a Sri Lankan store split into four categories. Most stores end up combining a card / wallet gateway with at least one manual payment option:
| Payment route | Examples | What to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Ecommerce gateway | PayHere, WebXPay | Card / foreign-card rates, plugins / APIs, plan structure, settlement, limits |
| Bank acquiring / IPG | Bank-specific solutions such as Sampath IPG | Merchant relationship, pricing, integration on your platform |
| Wallet / QR | iPay (LOLC Finance), FriMi (Nations Trust Bank), Dialog Pay (Dialog Axiata) | Buyer coverage in your audience, API / QR workflow, settlement |
| Manual payment | Cash on delivery, bank transfer | Operations and reconciliation; delivery-failure workflow; cash handling |
Entity notes: iPay is part of the LOLC Finance ecosystem (not Dialog). Dialog Pay is Dialog Axiata's payment platform, launched July 2026 as a rebrand of the Genie app, and consolidates eZ Cash, LankaQR and bank-account payment functions. FriMi is provided by Nations Trust Bank.
Fee structures, subscription tiers, foreign-card rates and settlement schedules vary materially between providers - and even within a provider by plan. Full comparison on Sri Lankan payment gateways.
Cash on delivery and manual methods
A payment strategy can combine online card/wallet payments with manual methods such as COD or bank transfer. Manual methods reduce payment-gateway dependency but create separate considerations: reconciliation, delivery failures, returns, refunds, and cash handling. Manual methods are also treated differently by hosted platforms - for example, Shopify's third-party transaction fee does not apply to COD, bank transfer or cheque orders.
Step 4 - domain and hosting
- Shopify includes hosting in the subscription. Connect a .lk or .com domain via DNS. See connecting a .lk to Shopify.
- WooCommerce requires separate hosting. A mostly-cached brochure-style store can often run on quality shared WordPress hosting; a dynamic, integration-heavy store may need more resources or managed WordPress. Choose by workload, not by SKU or order-count thresholds. See WordPress hosting for Sri Lanka.
- Domain: register a .lk with LK Domain Registry directly or an authorised agent, or a .com with any registrar. See domains in Sri Lanka.
Step 5 - shipping and fulfilment
Decide how delivery rates, zones, tracking and COD will work before launch. Common Sri Lankan couriers include Domex, Aramex, Pronto and Ninja Van; specific service quality, coverage and API availability vary by courier and route. Model:
- Delivery zones - Colombo vs other districts vs remote areas.
- Delivery rates - flat, weight-based, distance-based, or per-item.
- Free-shipping thresholds, if any.
- COD workflow - collection, remittance schedule, delivery-failure and return handling.
- Tracking - what customers see and how updates flow to the store.
- Returns - customer-initiated flow, pickup vs drop-off, refund path via the original payment method.
Step 6 - understand cost
Ecommerce cost splits into three layers: launch cost (build), fixed operating cost (subscription / hosting / domain / apps), and variable cost of sales (gateway processing plus any platform third-party transaction fee). A store doing LKR 100,000 per month and one doing LKR 10,000,000 per month can have similar build costs but dramatically different variable costs.

Frequently asked questions
Which payment gateways work in Sri Lanka?
PayHere and WebXPay are two established Sri Lankan ecommerce payment providers with published card-rate structures and integrations for major platforms. iPay (operated by LOLC Finance) provides an additional wallet/QR route. Bank-provided IPG solutions such as Sampath IPG offer card acquiring for merchants with an existing bank relationship. FriMi and Dialog Pay (Dialog Axiata's rebranded Genie / LankaQR / eZ Cash ecosystem) provide wallet and QR options. Shopify Payments is not currently available in Sri Lanka; Wix Payments is also not available. Full comparison lives on the payment gateways page.
Which platform is best for a Sri Lankan online store?
There is no universal answer. WooCommerce gives more hosting/platform control and integrates directly with Sri Lankan payment providers (PayHere and WebXPay both publish WooCommerce plugins). Shopify reduces infrastructure and maintenance work but Sri Lankan merchants normally need a third-party payment provider because Shopify Payments is not currently available here - and Shopify then charges its plan-specific third-party transaction fee on eligible gateway-processed orders. The right fit depends on payment requirements, operating model, development capacity and total cost. See Shopify vs WooCommerce for the full comparison.
How much does an ecommerce site cost to build in Sri Lanka?
Ecommerce build cost varies substantially based on catalogue setup, design, platform, integrations and fulfilment requirements. See the ecommerce website cost page for planning ranges by delivery model, the three-layer cost model (launch cost + fixed operating cost + variable payment fees) and current gateway/subscription figures.
Do I need business registration to sell online in Sri Lanka?
Payment-provider onboarding requirements vary by provider and business type. Some providers require formal business registration for certain entity types (private limited companies, formal sole proprietorships, partnerships), while others accept alternative proof for freelancers, home-based businesses or clubs/associations. Bank-account requirements also vary - some providers accept a savings account, not only a current account. Check the exact provider's current merchant requirements before applying.
Are cash on delivery and bank transfer supported?
Yes - a payment strategy can combine online card/wallet payments with manual methods such as cash on delivery or bank transfer. Manual methods reduce payment-gateway dependency but create separate reconciliation, delivery-failure and cash-handling considerations. Shopify's third-party transaction fee, for example, does not apply to manual payment methods such as COD, bank transfer or cheques.
