A .lk domain is a domain name under Sri Lanka's country-code top-level domain (ccTLD). LK Domain Registry, established in 1990, is the sole administrator of .lk. What is a .lk domain?
A .lk domain is a domain name under Sri Lanka's country-code top-level domain (ccTLD). LK Domain Registry manages the .lk namespace and delegates each registered domain to the DNS nameservers configured for it. Those DNS records then point the website, email and other services to the appropriate providers.
Because .lk is a ccTLD, Google treats it as a strong country/geographic targeting signal that the site is associated with Sri Lanka. Who manages .lk?
LK Domain Registry (domains.lk) is the sole administrator of the .lk namespace. It was established in 1990 and continues to operate .lk as Sri Lanka's national domain registry today.
Every provider that sells a .lk in Sri Lanka is either:
- LK Domain Registry - the national registry / operator, selling directly.
- An authorised agent - a provider recognised by the Registry to offer .lk registration services.
- Another reseller or web designer - may include domain registration as part of a wider service, routing through an authorised agent.
If a provider claims to be an authorised .lk agent, verify that status against the Registry's current agent list. If buying through a third party, confirm which authorised agent or Registry relationship is behind the sale and ensure the registrant details correctly identify you or your organisation.
How the .lk namespace is structured
The Registry categorises .lk into a top-level namespace, a set of open second-level namespaces, and a set of specially administered (closed) namespaces. "Suggested for" reflects the Registry's suggested-use guidance for the open second-levels - not a hard eligibility rule.

Sinhala .ලංකා and Tamil .இலங்கை domain names
LK Domain Registry also supports Sinhala .ලංකා and Tamil .இலங்கை internationalized domain names (IDNs) under its IDN policy, alongside the Latin-script .lk namespace. These allow domain names entirely in Sinhala or Tamil script.
Who can register .lk?
The Registry's open namespaces are available to a broad set of registrants:
- Individuals - including foreign individuals.
- Organisations - including foreign organisations.
- No current local-presence requirement for the open namespaces (.lk, .com.lk, .org.lk, .edu.lk, .hotel.lk, .web.lk).
- Specially administered namespaces (.sch.lk, .gov.lk, .ac.lk) have their own eligibility and documentation requirements administered by the Registry.

Registrant information matters - get it right at registration
Every .lk domain is recorded with a set of contact roles at LK Domain Registry, including the Registrant and the Organisation. The Registry's official policy is that the Registrant / Organisation fields must reflect the actual person or organisation using the domain. If a provider registers a domain on behalf of a customer, the Organisation should be the customer's organisation and the Registrant should be a contact from that organisation - not the provider.

When .lk makes sense
.lk is a strong option when Sri Lanka is the website's primary geographic market and a locally recognisable domain fits the brand. Typical fits include a Sri Lankan restaurant, a local professional-services firm, a Sri Lankan retailer, a local organisation, or a Sri Lankan brand generally.
A nonprofit might consider .org.lk; an educational organisation might consider .edu.lk. These are suggested uses under the Registry's guidance, not requirements.
When .com may make more sense
For a business primarily targeting multiple international markets, a generic top-level domain such as .com may provide a cleaner long-term structure than a country-specific .lk.
