.lk domain: what it is, who runs it and when to pick one

Editorial review: 28 August 2026 · By: Alston Antony

Quick answer

A .lk domain is a domain name under Sri Lanka's country-code top-level domain (ccTLD). LK Domain Registry, established in 1990, is the sole administrator of .lk. The current direct tariff for a top-level Economy .lk is LKR 5,000/year VAT-inclusive (checked 2026-08-29); open second-level namespaces (.com.lk, .org.lk, .edu.lk, .hotel.lk, .web.lk) sit in the Budget category at LKR 1,000/year. There is no local-presence requirement - individuals and companies from any country can register .lk. Agent pricing may differ from the Registry tariff; see the .lk domain price guide for the full comparison.

What is a .lk domain?

A .lk domain is a domain name under Sri Lanka's country-code top-level domain (ccTLD). LK Domain Registry manages the .lk namespace and delegates each registered domain to the DNS nameservers configured for it. Those DNS records then point the website, email and other services to the appropriate providers.

Because .lk is a ccTLD, Google treats it as a strong country/geographic targeting signal that the site is associated with Sri Lanka. It does not guarantee rankings in Sri Lankan search results - that still depends on the site's content, relevance and other ranking factors. See .lk vs .com for the extension-choice comparison.

Who manages .lk?

LK Domain Registry (domains.lk) is the sole administrator of the .lk namespace. It was established in 1990 and continues to operate .lk as Sri Lanka's national domain registry today.

Every provider that sells a .lk in Sri Lanka is either:

If a provider claims to be an authorised .lk agent, verify that status against the Registry's current agent list. If buying through a third party, confirm which authorised agent or Registry relationship is behind the sale and ensure the registrant details correctly identify you or your organisation.

How the .lk namespace is structured

The Registry categorises .lk into a top-level namespace, a set of open second-level namespaces, and a set of specially administered (closed) namespaces. "Suggested for" reflects the Registry's suggested-use guidance for the open second-levels - not a hard eligibility rule.

Sinhala .ලංකා and Tamil .இலங்கை domain names

LK Domain Registry also supports Sinhala .ලංකා and Tamil .இலங்கை internationalized domain names (IDNs) under its IDN policy, alongside the Latin-script .lk namespace. These allow domain names entirely in Sinhala or Tamil script.

Who can register .lk?

The Registry's open namespaces are available to a broad set of registrants:

The Registry publishes separate LKR local and USD foreign pricing tables. Current agent pricing and the year-one vs renewal comparison sits on the .lk domain price guide.

Registrant information matters - get it right at registration

Every .lk domain is recorded with a set of contact roles at LK Domain Registry, including the Registrant and the Organisation. The Registry's official policy is that the Registrant / Organisation fields must reflect the actual person or organisation using the domain. If a provider registers a domain on behalf of a customer, the Organisation should be the customer's organisation and the Registrant should be a contact from that organisation - not the provider.

Ownership/handover clauses on a web design quotation should reference these principles - see how to choose a web designer for the specific clauses to write in.

When .lk makes sense

.lk is a strong option when Sri Lanka is the website's primary geographic market and a locally recognisable domain fits the brand. Typical fits include a Sri Lankan restaurant, a local professional-services firm, a Sri Lankan retailer, a local organisation, or a Sri Lankan brand generally.

A nonprofit might consider .org.lk; an educational organisation might consider .edu.lk. These are suggested uses under the Registry's guidance, not requirements.

When .com may make more sense

For a business primarily targeting multiple international markets, a generic top-level domain such as .com may provide a cleaner long-term structure than a country-specific .lk. This is not a hard rule - a strong international brand can and does live under a ccTLD - but multi-market audience and international recognition are common reasons Sri Lankan businesses pick .com. Frequently asked questions

Who administers .lk?

LK Domain Registry, established in 1990, is the sole administrator of the .lk namespace. Every authorised .lk agent (register.lk, LankaHost, Provider.lk, SriLankaHosting.lk and others) sells into the same central Registry database - the record itself lives with the Registry, not the agent.

Do I need to be Sri Lankan to register a .lk?

No. The Registry currently has no local-presence requirement, and individuals and companies from any country can register a top-level .lk or an open second-level such as .com.lk. The Registry publishes separate LKR local and USD foreign pricing tables.

Is .lk the same as .com.lk?

No. The top-level .lk (Economy category) is the primary Sri Lankan namespace, direct-tariff LKR 5,000/year VAT-inclusive (checked 2026-08-29). The second-level namespaces such as .com.lk sit in the Budget category at LKR 1,000/year direct. .com.lk can be a lower-cost alternative when it suits the brand or the preferred .lk is unavailable.

Does Sri Lanka support Sinhala or Tamil domain names?

Yes. LK Domain Registry supports the Sinhala .ලංකා and Tamil .இலங்கை internationalized domain names (IDNs) under its IDN policy, alongside the Latin-script .lk namespace.
