The three reseller operating models

"Reseller hosting" is not a single product. Grouping cPanel/WHM reseller plans, agency multi-site hosting and reseller platforms as one comparison hides real decision axes. These are three distinct models a Sri Lankan freelancer or agency can build a client-hosting practice on.

Do you actually need WHM?

Most Sri Lankan freelancers assume "reseller hosting = WHM/cPanel". That is one option, not the only option. Ask what your clients actually need before picking the model.

• Clients need their own hosting account: traditional cPanel/WHM reseller (Namecheap, Provider.lk, HostGator, ResellerClub) is the right fit. Each client gets their own login, their own resource share, their own email accounts.
• You manage everything for clients and they never touch a panel: agency multi-site hosting is often simpler. SiteGround GoGeek's Site Tools with white-label access is a mature version of this; Cloudways with multiple applications on one server is another. No WHM licensing to worry about.
• You're selling hosting as a productised recurring service under your brand: WHM/cPanel or a proper reseller platform (ResellerClub) becomes essential. Clients sign up, get their own control panel, get billed through WHMCS.
• Clients require isolated resources per site: shared reseller pools are not the right structure. Move selected high-value clients to VPS or managed cloud with per-site instances.

Reseller options for Sri Lanka

Every row below is source-verified against the vendor's own page on 2026-08-27. Cells left explicit (rather than filled with an assumption) indicate the specific field could not be independently verified.

Included-account and storage figures reflect the specific tier named. WHMCS costs vary provider to provider - Namecheap charges USD 8/mo for WHMCS Starter separately; SiteGround does not use WHMCS at all; Sri Lanka Hosting is Plesk not cPanel. Treat billing-software licensing as part of your operating cost.

Real profitability math

Client-count rules like "you need 5 clients before reseller pays off" or "past 30 clients move to VPS" are misleading because they treat every client site as equivalent. A profitability check needs the real operating cost, not just the reseller plan price.

The equation:

Effective cost per client = (reseller plan cost + WHMCS/billing licence + payment-gateway fees + backup or add-on services + your support labour + malware / incident handling + taxes) ÷ number of paying clients.

Worked example on Namecheap Nebula (USD 19.88/mo at USD/LKR 320, roughly LKR 6,362/mo) with 10 active clients:

• Reseller plan cost: LKR 6,362/mo
• WHMCS Starter add-on: USD 8/mo, roughly LKR 2,560
• Payment-gateway fees on retail collection (PayHere Lite 3.3%): varies by revenue
• Your support labour: ~30 minutes to 2 hours per client per month at your billable rate
• Backups, add-ons, malware handling: variable

Gross infrastructure spread (reseller cost divided by clients) does not equal margin. If you charge LKR 1,500/mo per client and 10 active accounts give ~LKR 15,000 gross revenue, the gross spread over infrastructure is roughly LKR 6,000 before you count WHMCS, PayHere fees, taxes and your own time. That is a real business, but it is a service business, not a passive-income product.

When to move past reseller hosting

The right trigger is resource pressure and business risk, not client count. Move past reseller (or move selected clients off the shared reseller pool) when one of these appears:

• Sustained resource pressure in WHM warnings - CPU throttle, memory limit, inode ceiling - that plugin tuning does not fix.
• High-value client requires isolation. A single client's traffic outgrows the shared pool's fair share, or the client demands SLAs the reseller plan cannot back.
• Compute noisy-neighbour incidents - another account's spike affects everyone else. This is distinct from mail reputation.
• Shared mail-reputation problems - client email lands in spam because of the shared IP. Mitigate first with a dedicated IP (available on higher reseller tiers) or an external SMTP relay before assuming a full migration is required.
• Business risk concentration - one incident on the reseller pool can affect every client at once. Larger client counts amplify this risk.

The migration path varies. For general resource pressure, a VPS or managed cloud (Cloudways Flexible on a suitable cloud region) provides more control - but note that multiple applications on one Cloudways server share that server's resources, so isolated CPU/RAM per client requires separate servers or containers rather than automatically appearing. For a specific high-value client, a dedicated small VPS may be more cost-effective than upgrading everyone.

Methodology and limitations

Providers on this comparison were shortlisted where three conditions held: current reseller plan and pricing could be independently verified against the vendor's own page; the plan could be signed up for by a Sri Lankan buyer; and panel choice, included accounts and resource limits were documented publicly.

• Prices change without notice. Every figure carries the vendor page date. Confirm the current price at time of purchase.
• WHMCS licensing is not universally included. Namecheap sells it as a separate USD 8/mo add-on; SiteGround does not use WHMCS at all; check the specific reseller plan.
• "Included accounts" numbers vary by product. SiteGround GoGeek is resource-bound rather than account-capped; Provider.lk's pay-as-you-go structure charges per additional account rather than capping.
• Server region confirmation is worth doing. Sri Lanka Hosting's own reseller page contains conflicting USA / Singapore location statements; other providers may not clearly disclose the specific data-centre a reseller account provisions in.
• HostGator pricing did not crawl reliably. The vendor page rendered placeholders in portions of the crawl; reproduce checkout for the actual current price rather than trusting a stale figure.
• No first-party performance or support tests published. Support quality and uptime commentary reflects vendor documentation only.
• Sri Lankan providers not evaluated as separate rows include others operating in the market who may fit specific requirements; buyers should evaluate directly.

Second, shared mail reputation: other reseller pool users - or a compromised account - harm the sending IP/domain reputation and every client's email starts landing in spam.
