Sri Lankan owners have three broad ways to build a website: a hosted website builder (Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger Website Builder), a hosted commerce platform (Shopify), or a self-hosted CMS (WordPress). Each trades platform simplicity against control, ongoing cost and portability differently. Which is right for you depends on what you're building and how important Sri Lankan payment support, portability and long-term operating cost are. What website builders really cost
Sticker subscription prices are only part of the picture. Compare all four dimensions before choosing:
- Required initial payment. Some hosted-builder and adjacent hosting promotions require multi-year prepayment on the first invoice - for example Hostinger's Premium web-hosting promotional USD 2.99/month rate is billed as a 48-month prepaid total (approximately USD 143.52 on the first invoice). Verify the exact commitment before signup.
- Renewal rate. Promotional monthly equivalents often step up materially at renewal. Ask for the exact renewal figure - Hostinger Premium renews at USD 10.99/month, for example.
- Hosting inclusion. Hosted builders include hosting in the subscription; self-hosted WordPress does not.
- Transaction and platform fees on any sales. Especially important for Sri Lankan Shopify merchants because Shopify Payments is not available locally and a third-party transaction fee typically applies on top of the gateway processing fee.
- Add-on apps or licences. Ongoing per-month or per-year costs that don't appear on the plan sticker.
- Currency and card fees. Foreign-currency subscriptions may result in exchange-rate differences or card/bank fees; check your card issuer's current terms.

Sri Lankan considerations that shape the choice
- .lk compatibility. All mainstream platforms accept a .lk domain via DNS - registration stays with LK Domain Registry or an authorised agent. See domains in Sri Lanka.
- Payment-gateway availability. This is where hosted platforms differ most for Sri Lankan merchants. Shopify Payments and Wix Payments are not available locally; Squarespace Payments is not currently listed for Sri Lanka. WordPress + WooCommerce integrates with Sri Lankan gateways directly. - Foreign-currency billing. Most hosted builders bill in a foreign currency; card issuer FX/international-transaction handling varies. Verify with your bank.
- Support and language. Global platforms typically support English; local-language support is provider-specific.

What happens if you leave? (portability, factually)
Hosted builders reduce technical responsibility but increase platform dependency. Self-hosted WordPress gives more infrastructure control but also makes you responsible for more maintenance. Neither is automatically the right trade - the balance depends on your team, workload and long-term plan.

* WordPress design portability is subject to theme/plugin licences and how much custom code depends on the specific plugin stack. Shopify theme downloads and product CSVs simplify some migration steps but do not turn a Shopify store into a portable standalone site; paid Shopify Theme Store licences are tied to the store for which they were purchased.

What actually counts as a 'website builder'?
This hub uses the term broadly to compare the main ways a Sri Lankan owner can build a site. That includes hosted builders such as Wix, Squarespace and Hostinger Website Builder (editor + hosting bundled), hosted commerce platforms such as Shopify (commerce-first, hosting bundled), and self-hosted CMSes such as WordPress (editor free, hosting separate). WordPress is technically a CMS rather than a hosted website-builder service, but it solves the same buying decision.
Do website builders support .lk domains?
Yes. Mainstream builders (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify) and self-hosted CMSes such as WordPress all accept a .lk domain connection via DNS. Registration stays with LK Domain Registry (directly or through an authorised agent) and does not need to move to use it with a hosted builder.
Can I take Sri Lankan online payments on these platforms?
Availability varies materially by platform and is one of the most important considerations for a Sri Lankan store. Shopify Payments is not currently listed as available in Sri Lanka, so Sri Lankan Shopify merchants generally use a third-party gateway (PayHere publishes an official Shopify app); Shopify may charge its own additional third-party transaction fee. Wix currently lists PayPal and Paymentwall as its payment providers for Sri Lanka - Wix Payments itself is not available locally. Squarespace Payments is not currently listed for Sri Lanka.
